The Top Race Day Mistake OCR and Hybrid Athletes Make

Learn the biggest mistake OCR athletes make and the simple solution to avoid it.

In a recent race, I was reminded a powerful lesson.  A lesson I teach my clients all the time, but a simple slip up and I found myself guilty of it which cost me several minutes in my race.

I was running the Spartan Super and having a great race.  Maybe one of my best races.  My pacing felt great and I was clean on all of my obstacles.

Then about half way through it hit me.

Stomach issues.  All of a sudden I felt significant cramps that slowed me down.  My race ended up being ok, but I lost several minutes from having to slow down.

I had to look back at my morning routine to see what happened.  I ate my normal prerace breakfast and everything else was my normal routine, except one thing.

I took two prerace supplements.  I've had both of these supplements before with no issues, but I never combined the two.

This is a huge mistake that I consistently see people make, including myself.

Race day is never a time to experiment with new things.  This goes for nutrition, gear, or anything else you do race day.

All of this should be planned out and tested ahead of time.  This is all part of your training program.  Usually we think of the exercises and workouts as the sole purpose of training.  But it is all testing and experimenting to find out what works best for you.

When you test things out and tweak them, you start to find out what works best for you.  I am often asked for recommendations for foods or supplements to help out on race day.  I am happy to give some recommendations, but I always remind clients that these need to be tested first during training before used on a race day.

Once you have tested it out you can plan out your race day so much easier.  There is no guess work.  You don't even have to put much thought into it.  Just follow the plan.

Test it out this week.  Try and dial in your nutrition to see what works best for you.  Before each workout, pay attention to what you are eating.  Then after the workout see how you felt.  Did it give you energy?  Did you feel hungry or full?

Once you have the foods or supplements that work well for you, you know exactly what to do for race day.
